favorite Animators

Genndy Tartakovsky, is an animator known for classic children cartoons such as Samurai Jack, Dexters lab (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/dexter/index.html), and Star Wars attack of the clones (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/starwars/index.html). I like his work, because it features prominately features likable colorful characters who often goes through wacky antics and square off against a central villian. He worked on the movies Dexter Laboratory Ego Trip .

Akira Toriyama, known mostly for "Dragon Ball Z" which came from a manga series "Shonen Jump". Manga which seems to be of Middle Eastern origian tend to portray cartoon characters that have body structures similar to humans. His influences appear to be martial art movies, considering his manga and character designs for cartoons and video games tend to be male action heroes who engage in battles.

After Effects Notes

Using alt and bracket places markers on areas of the text

Effect> Generate> Ramp (for gradient background)

To use pickwip make sure "parent option is on"

  1. How to set a keyframe
  • press the stopwatch icon next to the position property
  • pressin the "end" takes the CTI (current time indicator) to the end of the keyframe
  • pressing the home key moves it to the beginning.
motion path show dotted lines that trace the path of the animation from start to finish. Each dot represents a position of fish at each frame in the timeline.

**preview animation in "Time Controls" shortcut is the number 0.
** there is a button shortcut for transform properties functions. S=scale, P=position, R=rotation

(page 30)

Bezier handles allow you to fine-tune curve of motion path.

Tweening versus interpolation
tweening: only in flash, only applied to objects on stage, symbol instances or grouped objects
interpolation: transitional frames between two keyframes, occurs as soon as a clockwatches is activated.

motion in After Effects is easier than flash because AE uses spatial (how a layer moves in compositions space) keyframes visualized as a motion path with belzier handles. (In flash you have to create a separate motion guide layer and link a drawn path to an object layer.

spatial and temporal interpolation
spatial is viewed as a motion path. Auto belzier creates a smooth rate of change from one keyframe to the next
Temporal: change of values in keyframes in regards to time. Default temp. inter. is Linear so value constantly changes.
>clicking "position" and the "Graphic editor" button allows for editing. Picking 'Auto Bezier' allows for more smooth animation.

Cool Animation I Saw

this animation did not need to use much to get its point across. The little Clay people helped the video convey alot of emotion. The music definitely went with the video http://www.vimeo.com/406607

Howtocheatinflash

  • 3d Object: a certain color palette in flash makes any object look 3d, the paint bucket can also be used to alter the 3d shape
  • Easing: used to make an animation look more "smooth" (realistic)

Bouncing Ball:
  1. create circular shape with gradient
  2. convert object to shape
  3. insert first keyframe (position shape at starting position)
  4. insert the next keyframe (place shape where it will go next)
  5. Insert Motion tween with easing set
*In CS4, i needed to press classic tween*

Vector- (graphics based images)
  • comprised of mathematical images
  • shapes (lines segments, paths,...)
  • Resolution independant
  • Text, shapes, logos, artwork
  • Illustrator Flash
  • Independant Resolution
Raster (bitmap)- image made of pixels on a grid
photographic images, depends on resolution (cannot be zoomed in passed a certain point)
  • used by photoshop, and corel

Using Flash CS3
  • to insert keyframe press f6 "the little black dots"
  • keyframe indicates an object is on stage/ movement/ start-end of action
  • Inserting a keyframe between a start and an end of an object is "inbetweening"
  • Interpolation: changes in size, color, etc. (changes in properties over time)
  • Inbetween drawing
  • onion skin: allows you to see all the actions taking place

Critiques

Justice Dance (director by Jonas & Francois)

The video is mish mash of images which appear on a black screen in the beginning, and then on the shirts of two dudes for five minutes. These creative designs help to provide something to watch will listening to the song "Dance".

"Audio Bullies Shot Me Down" (produced by Filmtecknarna.com)

This video is a chaotic mix of motion graphics which strangely enough provides entertainment for the song "Bang Bang". The fact that the graphics are chaotic make them perfect for this song.

"Father and Daughter" (by Michael Dudok de Wit)
A lengthy black and white animation shows a tear jerkin story of a daughter riding her bike everyday throughout the shadowed scenery to the same place her father sailed away. The use of shadows and values gave the film a peaceful, and homey feel to it.

"We Will Rock You" (directed by Soandsau, animated by invisible, and produced by Wizz)

A vibrant, energetic animation to the song "we will rock you" uses cause and effect and transition for the wacky antics of the water boy, to create a successfully coherent video.

"Destiny 7"
The black and white cell shaded animation helps provide the mood for the somber song. The song and the visual shows the female singer as someone looking for someone to spend time with. The video is definitely worth watching again for the audio and visuals.

Self Fulfulling (Beady Belle)- directed by Linda Fagerli Saethren
The soulful music video which features India. Aire features what looks like stop motion animation featuring puppets move. The characters are having a dance off with moves relating to break dancing and moonwalking. The song and the visuals come together perfectly and express a mood of soulful relaxation. The dance moves of the puppets make the video watchable over and over.

Trembled Blossoms
A cel shaded animation where everything comes to life when it comes into contact when other things. It uses appeal through its bright colors. The featured female character seems to inherit clothing from anything she touches. Every item seemlessly turns into a clothing item and wrap itself around the featured female.

N.A.S.A. "money"
The group N.A.S.A. features Chuck D. in this stop motion video with visuals relating to how money is the root of all evil. An example is the word "obey". A camera is shown with the word "obey" which is looking around. That animation might have been used to portray money as a villain who wants people under its control, who also starts wars and corrupt the minds of notable people in the world.

Community Voicemail PSA
Using an example of a homeless man using the voicemail while still job hunting, the pose-to-pose sketches of the man give the animation something to remember it by. The colorful animation providing visuals mixed in with the man help to create something that will entertain a younger audience but still hold the attention of older audience.

This video features a sort of clay resembling creature moving and performing tricks

"And Then There Was Salsa"
This animation could easily pass for a commercial for Salsa. It is rendered in 3d effects and objects seemed to float off of the page giving making it look as if it is coming out a you.

"Blood Diamonds"
Got its point across, reminds me of Kanye West "diamonds are forever"

"History of Stuff"
seen this video in another class before

"After The Rain"
created with After Effects

"Wireframe"
An interactive skeleton in which users can pull string connected to the skeletons limbs forcing it into fun creative poses, while also teaching about the limbs of the skeletons. The game causes people to want to spend at least a few minutes selecting different options such as "walking" and "dragging". This made we want to look into how to make something like that.

"Back to the way it was"

Haiti From the Beginning

The animation opens up with an image of what Haiti looks like after the earthquake. At this moment peaceful music is playing. Following this, dramatic music starts playing in the background, and a clock is shown with the hands going in reverse clockwise order. Important scenes in the history of Haiti are shown starting from the way Haiti looks after the hurricane and rewinding back to when Haiti was found by Christopher Columbus. It will be sort of an animated timeline which uses a combination of stop-motion graphics and animation, representing historical moments in Haiti's history from the present back to revolution, to slavery and back to Christopher Columbus discovering it.

Throughout the different instances in the timeline, the faces of the people inhabiting the island are shown to help convey the feeling of the time in History. The music becomes louder and more dramatic as controversial moments are shown. A clock will appear on the screen again, with the hands going in clockwise order this time, and all of the footage of Haiti's history quickly fast forwards back to the scene before the earthquake where the people are happy. Text will appear on the screen saying "everyone should have a chance of being happy", "help Haiti reach theirs".

Proposals

"Equality"

A black screen shows the word "Equality". Afterwards, words that are synonyms are shown on the screen. The following word shown is fairness, with a picture shown of various people having everyday priviliges such as access to a water fulton and buying food from a grocery store. The word "Sameness" will come after and show a picture of a man giving a hand to a child that fell down, followed by a picture of them walking to show everyone should be treated the same with kindness. This message will be further emphasized with pictures of people laughing from all around the word. Finally the word "Equlality" will come across the screen again with the message "everyone deserves a change to be treated equally, fairly and with the same kindness and courteousness. "Help Haiti" will show up on the screen.

"Back to the way it was"

Haiti From the Begining

A collage of images show where the area of Haiti is located along with what the scenery looks like after the earthquake. Following this, dramatic music starts playing in the background, and important scenes in the history of Haiti are shown such as slavery. A short of animated timeline is shown using stop-motion graphics and animation, with history of Haiti showing starting with its current condition rewinding back to the way it started. Throughout the different instances in the timeline the faces of the Haitian people are shown to help convey the feeling of the time in History. The music becomes dramatic as contraversal moments are shown.
